National Bulletin
2nd January, 2001 Bulletin
It gives me great pleasure to write a few words in this Bulletin, a Bulletin that
shows that Pigeon Racing is now getting the recognition that it deserves. What better news
could we have had for pigeon racing at the start of a New Year, Peter Titmuss has been
awarded an MBE. This is an honour that is well deserved and it has been achieved through
good work all round. President, committee and all members of the National FC will join in
the congratulations to Peter who is an excellent ambassador for the sport of pigeon
racing. Over the years that I have been involved with pigeons I have seen Peter as one of
the figureheads of pigeon racing and all that goes with it. My first actual face to face
meeting with him was across the table at a National FC presentation in Torquay a few years
ago and on that occasion I remember calling him Fred. The name is something that has been
confusing for a few because Peter was christened George James William, perhaps someone can
tell us where the change of name came in, there has to be a story. Getting the name wrong
on that occasion didnt cause any problems because we have had a few conversations
since I have taken on the position as Press Officer for the NFC. The achievements that
Peter has gained through his pigeons have been legendary with 8 RNHU Gold Medals, 3 RNHU
trophies, on 5 occasions Peter has been awarded the Col. A.H. Osman Mem Trophy. On
the North Road he has been 1st sec 9th Open Faroes 746mls only bird timed in the longest
section. NRCC Lerwick 1st section 3rd Open only bird in the section on the day of
liberation which has happened more than once. On the south route top achievements have
also been won in the Barcelona race with 6th & 10th British section on the only
occasions that he competed. Peters National and Combine performances have been
excellent through dedication and hard work. That hard work with his own race team has
always spilled over into his interests on the official side of the sport where he has been
a loyal servant with the NFC for over 50yrs, in fact he was first elected onto the
committee in 1951. At a recent National committee meeting Peter was still getting involved
in decision making which is a true to form for a man who has been helped by his wife
during many years if looking after the best interests of the sport. Congratulations Peter
on this latest award, you certainly deserve it, your wok in the sport has now been
recognised at the highest very level, all the best for the New Year. I cannot go without
saying well done to those who have put in the work in getting Peter the recognition that
he has now received.
