National Bulletin
23rd September, 2001 Bulletin
I have kept this letter from Sydney Warren on hold but as always the bits and pieces
that I receive are always used. "I thought you might like to know about the
"Tale of the two eggs". Mr Titmuss and I raced together in the Knebworth FC and
I used to help him to carry his pigeons. one Friday night he gave me a small box and said
there are two eggs in there and they should be alright. The two pigeons that hatched from
those eggs were sent in the NFC National Guernsey and won me £1050. One pigeon went on to
win 18th open 1831 birds London & South East Classic Le Ferte Bernard. 97th
Open 2905 birds Alencon Classic, 1st Bergerac 18th fed, 2nd
club Nantes. Won the overseas average on her own, not bad for a gift of two eggs". I
have heard many stories concerning Peter Titmuss over the years and the way he has passed
on quality pigeons and no doubt there are many stories out there untold on this Ace
amongst the pigeon fraternity.
I was looking through the Guernsey Old hens race and the initial report on the race
which is compiled with times and vels received but from time to time for various reasons
the result gets changed. This was the case with section I when the report sent to me had
Brian & Sue Stone down as section winners but that was not the case with the final
result. The section win goes to Tom Sarginson who had an excellent race having entered
four pigeons. The end result was that they finished up 1st 4th 5th
section 8th 18th 35th open. These three hens have flown
consistently well all season and did their owner proud on this occasion. They are bred
from the Herbots lines that were introduced in 1986 and since then have won many prizes
right through to National level, this result really does top the lot. They are mainly the
"Supercrack Crusson" lines that have produced many winners over the years and
are highly rated on the continent. Well done on what is an excellent performance on a day
when fanciers from all over the Country had a share in a great National race.
With last years Pau race in mind we made the long awaited trip over to see Brian
Stansfield and his family at Tattenhall. We had been promising ourselves at look at these
lofts all winter but never got around to it but as always we get there in the end. When we
got there we had the added bonus of meeting Mr & Mrs John Wills of Frimley who are one
of the top distance racing lofts in the Country, John has offered to help me out when we
go down to that area for a few reports. Both Elizabeth and myself seem to remember John
and his good lady from somewhere else but neither of us can remember it will come
eventually. This was a sensible days conversation with good pigeon men who like to compete
in the same type of races that we do ourselves so the day was made even better. I was
rather surprised at the lofts and the way that Brian has the pigeons, when I say surprised
I am referring to the fact that it is all basic and no fancy big range of lofts.
Everything was simple and what made it better was that there are some fine pigeons there
to see and handle, wouldnt suit the sprint man but they suited me. I remember the
report in the BHW saying, "I did not imagine when sat waiting for Pau birds that I
would end the day having to interview my father, Brian Stansfield". This section
winner is a 2 year-old Chequer Cock that has become known as "Checkmate" and was
clocked at 12.27. Brian is a fancier who believes in going back to nature and the pigeons
are fed via a hopper full of beans with a little Hormoform and what appears to be more
that their share of peanuts. With his thoughts on going back to nature Brian has the
pigeons on an open hole as much as possible and his ideas of a racing loft are that it
should be as open as possible with wire sides. The section winner is a real cracker and is
my type for the channel events and in fact is breeding a nice type. Sire of 1st section,
17th open NFC Pau 2000. Bred by Keith Bush of Coassal. Sire won a Gold Award from Lerwick
with the NRCC and is off Neil Bush of Amcott's Nantes Hen when paired to her own grandson
which won at Niort and Pau. Dam is from a half brother and sister mating, the grand dam of
both being Keith Bush's "Octavia Gayle", 2nd open NRCC Lerwick. Dam of 1st
section, 17th open NFC Pau. Bred by the late Kenny Hogg of Hesketh Bank and gifted to B.
Stansfield & Sons as a youngster. No further details known. I shall be keeping
an eye on Brians performances next season to see if the pigeons that I have seen and
handled can once again top the section with the National FC from the longest race of the
season.
While we were talking about performances John pointed out that Mr & Mrs
Bellchambers & Sons have been omitted from the National result. I did say that I was
aware of this and were in the process of doing something and to make things easier John is
going to have a word with the team about giving credit where it is due. I am also told
that the partnership had a great race with the Fed taking the first seven positions which
has never been done before. It is a case of the National Bulletins are here to publicise
the club and the winners so why not get the info and photos in the post.
